Providing and Verifying Unique Student Identifier (USI)
The Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a national government initiative for all students undertaking nationally recognised training from 1 January 2015.
A USI is a learner’s individual education number for life. It collates a record of the learner’s vocational education and training (VET) undertaken in Australia. Learners at university, TAFE or other nationally recognised training all need a USI. Without one, the learner cannot receive Commonwealth financial assistance, qualifications or statements of attainment for completed studies.
How do I apply for a USI?
Creating a USI will only take a few minutes and it is free. You can apply for your USI via the USI website at https://www.usi.gov.au/ You only need to create a USI once and it will stay with you for life.
In order to create your USI, you will need at least one form of ID such as an Australian Passport, Birth Certificate, Driver's Licence or Medicare Card.
Find your USI
If you have undertaken nationally recognised training since 1 January 2015, you may already have a USI. You only ever need one USI. If you think you have a USI but can't remember it, you can find your USI via www.usi.gov.au/students/find-your-usi
Matching a USI to the student attending training
As an RTO, HITsa is required to ensure that the identification of the student presenting for training matches the USI record provided on this form. Therefore, we are required to sight photo ID of student's on their first day of training.
HITsa understands that some individuals are unable to access or obtain standard identification documents and therefore we ask that you please contact us as soon as possible if you will be unable to provide photo ID and alternatives can be considered. This is important as we will be unable to issue certificates until this verification has occurred.
